For a long time, the iPhone and other clones were called "smart phones" simply because they loaded everything but the kitchen sink into these tiny imports. Something very interesting has happened and has been reported by many sellers of these Chinese, import iPhone knock offs. For the longest time, the original iClone P168 was the best seller. Then, the quad band model (P168+) gained a good bit of ground.

The recent releases of the 168S model (quad band shake and tilt) and the 168C (quad band, and dual sim active) have further split the sales.

However, today most sellers will tell you that there are two new models that are rapidly emerging as brisk sellers - the i9 and the T32 (aka Daxian X999.) Both have features previous models did not have. This article will focus on the similarities and differences between these two models to help you decide which may be best for you.

Similarities: Both phones are considered to be loaded, with web browsing, email and texting, MP3 / MP4, Java, digital camera, web cam, Bluetooth, and some features that until know have not been included. Both are considered smartphones.

Quad Band Vs. Tri Band: The i9 will support GSM 850, 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz bands offering coverage for almost all GSM carriers world wide. The T32 covers 900, 1800, and 1900 MHZ bands. This will work fine for many carriers. There are some AT&T rural and Cingular carriers who operate on the 850 or 1900 bands. You can easily find out which you need through your carrier.

Productivity: Both of these phones are productivity power houses, but in different ways. The T32 contains WiFi, GPS, Windows Mobile 6.0 (with Java 2.0 for gaming). Obviously, this opens up a huge amount of productivity and gaming possibilities and ensures that it offers a lot more than most clones. The i9 on the other hand supports Java which means that you can download third party software for gaming, but there are also productivity options like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. It doesn't have WiFi, but in my opinion it's still sufficient.

Dual Sim Active: Generally, the i9 offers dual sim active, which means that two can be online at once. Most 32s (which are properly listed) do not have this feature.

Shake And Tilt: The i model has the popular shake and tilt feature (shaking the phone to advance music and media) and the T model or Daxian generally does not.

Memory: I've seen both of these models holding up to 8GB of memory. The memory is expandable, but most times, you see them selling with between 2 - 4 GB of memory. Of course, models with more GB will be more expensive, but the phones can grow with you and don't need to slow down as you fill them.

Price: As a general rule, the CECT T32 is more expensive than the CECT i9, running somewhere in the mid to upper $200 range, while the i model is closer to $150.

So, Which Is Better? Which of these phones work better for you will greatly depend on what you need in a phone. If you need a quad band and want the latest shake and tilt model, the i9 may fit the bill. But if you're dead set on WiFi, GPS, and Windows Mobile 6.0, then the T32 / Daxian may be the way to go.

Samsung Looks to Corn Fields to Help Produce New Mobile Phones

The Olympics are not the only thing rocking Asia this past few weeks.

In South Korea, Samsung is set to reveal their latest entry in the field of environmentally conscious mobile phones, known throughout the industry as "eco-phones".

The Samsung E200 Eco contains parts that are made from bioplastics, that is, materials extracted from corn. Amazingly, it is not the first mobile phone to contain such materials. It is the first, however, in which the entire phone casing is made from bioplastic materials. (Source: reghardware.co.uk) But what features does a phone made from corn have to offer?

In addition to being an environmentally friendly product, the E200 Eco contains a built-in 1.3-megapixel camera, video messaging capabilities and an MP3 player.

The E200 Eco comes off the heels of two other "green" handsets recently released by Samsung. Both the W510 and F268 are manufactured using techniques that eliminate the need for harmful materials like lead, cadmium and mercury.

Samsung has not stopped with the phones themselves. The battery chargers for both the F268 and the new E200 Eco are now free of a common flame retardant that has long been feared to be harming the environment, while the F268 has a built-in alarm system in its battery charger that emits a loud sound when the phone is fully charged.

Even the packaging for all Samsung "eco-phones" are made from recycled materials.

Samsung is not the only company hoping to develop environmentally friendly mobile phones. NEC Corp. has been using bioplastic materials in most of their phone models since 2006. Nokia is also jumping on board with the crusade, recently announcing that they will introduce 40 new biodegradable models to the market by the end of 2008. (Source: nytimes.com)

Although nobody can doubt that the drive towards eco-friendly innovations is a step in the right direction, some analysts are accusing companies who commit to the "green revolution" of carrying a hidden agenda. While these companies create a wholesome image for their products, many fear that costs will soar, and worse, people will be willing to pay these inflated prices for the simple peace of mind that they are helping to protect the environment.

The Samsung E200 Eco will be released in Europe next month, though the North American release date has yet to be confirmed.

The idea that the cell phone is now called a smart phone really a good description of what they've become. Today, more of us want our mobile phones to be fully loaded with every imaginable feature: Internet accessibility, MP3 capabilities, GPS navigation, email devices. 2008 is the year the smart phone goes mainstream.

The big race for smart phones really started in the year 2008. Prior to 2008, there was a lot of discussion in a lot of prototypes, but it was the iPhone that really unleash the possibilities with a smart phone.. it was the iPhone that raised the bar and all other manufacturers are chasing to follow. The original iPhone sold 5 million units despite being available only in the United States and select parts of Europe. So the release of the new 3G iPhone from Apple it is no surprise that this is a really big push for the smart phone.

When you look at the numbers in smart phones sales, the mobile phone industry released its latest statistics on the smartphones and their impact on the market. According to Gartner, Inc, smartphone sales have increased worldwide by nearly 30% just since 2007. In a slowing economy, the mere fact that any given industry has a 30% increase in sales when the general market is in decline is proof that the smart phone is poised to take off.

The iPhone isn't the only smartphone on the market. That being said, it's success has proven the viability of the item in the marketplace, and competitors are following suit. While smartphones, like those created by Blackberry, were once considered only desirable by on-the-go business professionals, every day consumers are gravitating to the full functionality, and the portability.

And although the prices for smart phones are relatively high when you sitter the cost compared to a regular cell phone, the demands is going to increase the effective efficiency in production, and naturally that should bring down the costs of smart phones. By bringing down the cost of the smart phone more people will be little for them and more smart phones will sell.

With the popularity of the iPhone, it's no surprise that other mobile phone companies are going to be hitting the market soon with their own smartphones. Samsung, for example, is releasing the Tocco. It has a touchscreen and allows for the dropping and dragging of widgets for the user's convenience. Nokia is also coming up to bat with its own version of this smart phone. They are currently working on a touchscreen model prototype currently referred to as Tube. Blackberry is also releasing its own model known as the BlackBerry Thunder. This should be available in Fall 2008.

And don't forget, Google is also on the horizon with their version of the phone. Not only are they working on an interesting open source platform, but the features that they are looking for in their phone should be exciting to see.

All of these model should do well, but the question is which one's the best? I'm thinking that people are going to side with the Apple. Either way, smart phones are a trend that is exploding in the technology sector and we are just looking at the infancy of the product.

Mobile phone model names seem to be becoming more and more obscure as the manufacturers continue to try and think up new and impressive names for their showpiece handsets, we have recently seen the likes of the Orsay and Viewty from LG, the Supernova range from Nokia and the Steel and Tocco from Samsung, however their latest release of handsets does have a sound foundation beneath their name.

The 'Soul' range of mobile phones actually stands for Spirit of Ultra, the Ultra range was the most successful series of handsets that the manufacturer had launched to date and the new 'Soul' range was to emulate that success.

The first release from the series has fast become the top selling handset from the company and was called the Samsung U900 Soul, originally launched in a simple graphite casing the phone went on to be produced in silver, black and pink casings with even more colour variants expected in the future.

Getting back to multimedia functionality, the Samsung U800 Soul b is also equipped with a music player that offers support for multiple audio file formats and the FM radio comes with RDS support.

Even though the Samsung U800 Soul b boasts super slim dimensions, the screen measures 2" with a display in 16 million colours. But not content with stopping there, the Samsung U800 Soul b's phonebook will hold contact details for as many as 1000 entries and the phone comes preloaded with an Office document viewer or top of the standard web browser, SMS, MMS, EMS and Email features.

The Samsung U800 is currently available in a silver casing as a SIM free handset with no contract or exclusively on the Orange UK network operator for a limited time, after which the handset will be rolled out to further networks and increase the number of tariffs available.

One of the first questions I am asked when shooting with a digital camera (after the "which camera do you use, question), is, what format should I shoot? Tiff, High Res JPEG, RAW etc. And the answer is very simple. RAW! There is NO other option. And you need to make sure that you are using the highest resolution (megapixels) available on your camera.

When using your camera, either film or digital SLR (DSLR) camera, you need to make sure that you use the most powerful (expensive) flash available for your system. When you shoot a wedding, you will need to use flash for basically every shot you take. Indoors and out, even in bright sunlight. The flash will light dark subjects inside and when you are outside, it will fill in the shadows on your subject, and make the resulting photos look their best.

Perhaps the most important element in photographing a wedding, is to make sure that the brides face and skin, look their best. The groom comes in a far second place when it comes to ensuring that your exposures are spot on. The bride is always the most important person in the event, and if you make her happy, you will no doubt, get lots of referrals for other events through word of mouth. A digital camera cannot record as wide a gamut of color and light as film, so you need to pretty much nail the exposure with a digital camera, every time. It can be very difficult to get nice even light on the brides face, but you need to do your best with every shot you take. This is why flash is so important when shooting outdoors. You need a good powerful flash unit to provide enough light to even out the shadows that are cast by the sun, on faces and gowns. You also need this flash unit especially when shooting in shady areas. Under an overcast sky, or in a shady spot next to a building for instance, the color of the light in the shadow is very blue. So, you need to use flash to put white light back onto the subjects, so the color looks natural and even, without a blue color cast.

A very important point to remember when you photograph the bride, is to make sure that there is lots of detail in the brides dress. With digital cameras, the sensor cannot record as wide a range of light to dark as with film, and whites in particular, can be very challenging to record with detail. This is where you need to be able to balance the flash with the available light to get acceptable results. Otherwise, you may have some angry people calling you after the event. And you cannot arrange a do-over for a wedding, it is a one shot deal. So, make sure you do lots of practice before your first real, paying event. A good way to practice is to have you wife/girlfriend/kids dress up in white clothes and take lots of shots and note the settings you need to get detail in the dress, and good skin tones on the brides face.

Whenever possible, set up the kids in the bridal party by themselves. These kinds of photos will sell to the parents, the bride and groom and many other family members, especially the grandparents. Part of your job is to not just take good photos, but to take photos that will sell and keep you in a job and allow you to buy more equipment as you need it. You should always take individual shots of each kid and have the parents help to get them comfortable so you can get some good shots. Always try to choose an interesting background where possible. In order to focus attention on the kids and not the background, I have made a selection around the kids in Adobe Photoshop, and darkened the background a little, so the kids will stand out and be the center of attention in the photo.

The Sony Ericsson K800i is the first of the Cyber-shot mobile range with 3G. This fantastic camera phone also has a 3.2 megapixel camera with auto-focus and a superb real xenon flash. The optics are of the highest quality and coupled with the picture stabilizing functionality this camera phone really can compete with digital cameras. In fact, you could mistake this mobile phone for a camera. The K800i has a very simple keypad which is nicely designed, even if the keys are a little on the small side. The large 2 inch screen is superb quality. Some would say this phone is slightly on the heavy side at 115g, but not for a 3G phone.

I was surprised to find that the video camera on the K800i was a disappointment after raving about its still camera. It does make use of the picture stabilizer functionality that the K800i offers, but the images quality just was not there. 3G video calls can be made via the second camera. The K800i's music player has a built in FM radio with RDS. Although good quality, the audio quality doesn't compare to the W900i. Wireless headsets are supported via Bluetooth. I would recommend purchasing at least a 1 GB memory card with this phone as the package does not contain one. This will give you plenty of space for your pictures and music.

3G phones are renowned for killing their battery, I am pleased to say SE seemed to have solved that problem with the K800i. No problems with connecting your K800i as it supports USB, Bluetooth, Fast-port and infared.

The Sony Ericsson K800i is a great all rounder with a superb camera when compared to the K750i. However, we would of liked to have seen built-in WI-FI and maybe a document viewer. The camera lens can become dislodge fairly easily and the keypad is a little fiddly. The K800i can be compared to the W900i, it is a little smaller but does not have as good a music player as the W900i.

Samsung G800 Review - A Heavyweight Contender

The Samsung G800 is one of the main handsets which I've been looking forward to scrutinising since its announcement. The main attraction (and marketing angle) is it being the first of the 5 Mega Pixel cameraphones to come with optical zoom, but that doesn't even cover half the story. Much in the same vein as the U600/U700 set; the G800 is the upgrade to the G600 and adds 3G into the list of features (amongst other things.)

The first thing to focus on is the dimensions of the G800 when compared with the G600. Frankly, there is no comparison to be made as where the G600 is sleek and compact, the G800 has been on a binge and tips the scales at a whopping 134 grams, exceeding its predecessor by 30 grams. It's also thicker though not quite as much as I was expecting, with the G800 at 18.9mm thick and only 3.9mm thicker than the G600. Overall the construction is surprisingly very good; the slider is solid and everything feels relatively secure, though for something that weighs this much, I would expect that.

A little concerning is that extremely glossy materials have been used all over the G800, resulting in fingerprint marks becoming more prominent than usual. Mind you, this issue pales in significance when seeing what the use of overly-glossy materials does to the display. In the G600, (a phone I have owned for several months and am very happy with) the display quality was excellent and also included a light sensor so that it could cope with all kinds of lighting variants. The G800 seems to me like a step backwards as the legibility when under any form of light is practically zero and is frankly unacceptable.

In keeping with this negative stand, the User Interface (UI) is much more basic than I expected. It has some similarities with the UI seen on the G600, but the fact is the G800's reputedly inferior brother has a more advanced version and does a much better job. The processor seems to be of a higher quality on the G600 too, which could explain some of the issues with the UI.

The main attraction of the G800 will obviously be the camera with its 3X Optical Zoom, but when put to the test against various other similarly spec'd mobile phones, including the G600 the results were a little startling. Considering the G800 is meant to be Samsung's premier cameraphone, I was surprised to see that the G600 seems to develop equal or better images in around 75% of all cases.

In conclusion, the G800's bad points do let it down quite severely. The difficulty involved in reading the screen when under bright sunlight is sure to irritate many and the weight issue is enough to make the G800 classifiable as a dangerous weapon. Though this is probably down to the mechanics needed for the Optical Zoom feature, its lack of effectiveness doesn't really warrant its inclusion or the detrimental effect it has.

The Samsung G800 is by no means a bad phone; it's just the fact that it isn't anywhere near as good as it could have been. Considering what it had to build on with the G600's undoubted success, the fact that the 'less powerful' handset eclipses it on so many key factors means that it cannot be classed as anything other than a disappointment.

As cell phones continue to shrink and their functions expand, they become increasingly inaccessible for millions of those with even a mild decline in vision, motor skills, or hearing. Clearly, these plans are a bit more complex than the Jitterbug plans but should still be attractive to anyone who is seeking an option that is more appropriate and accessible for people needing basic calling functions only.

Further evidence of the growing awareness of the need for simplicity and affordability is a cell phone plan AT&T announced a short time ago. AT&T's Senior Nation 200 Plan provides users with 200 anytime minutes, 500 Nights & Weekend minutes, and unlimited in network mobile-to-mobile calling all for $29.99/month.

Although these recent entrants may not offer perfect solutions, they are certainly an indication that calls for more basic cell phones and cell phone plans are not falling on deaf ears. With more players recognizing the need to market to this segment of the population, consumers are bound to benefit as competition begins to heat up.
